By Demola Akinyemi, Ilorin Kwara State security authorities have confirmed that three worshippers were rescued following a Sunday morning attack on an ECWA Church in Omugo community, Ifelodun Local Government Area. The attackers reportedly abducted thirteen worshippers during the weekly service, sparking panic among congregants and residents. Joint security operatives, including police, forest guards, and soldiers, pursued the assailants into nearby forests, resulting in the rescue of three victims. A credible source from the Kwara South Joint Security Watch, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed that nine of the abducted worshippers were still being held and expressed concern that the church is located less than two kilometres from a military base. He suggested a possible security compromise, adding that four persons recently abducted in neighbouring Babanla community remain in captivity despite a N10 million ransom raised by the community. Commissioner for Communications, Bolanle Olukoju, confirmed the development, commending the coordinated response of security forces and local vigilantes. She said the government has directed intensified efforts to rescue the remaining victims and apprehend the attackers. “The Kwara State Government strongly condemns the cowardly targeting of a place of worship and reiterates that such acts of violence have no place in our communities,” Olukoju stated. She urged residents to remain vigilant and support security operations, noting that ongoing forest combing efforts have yielded positive results in curbing criminal activities in affected areas. The government assured the public of its continued commitment to protecting lives and property and sustaining collaboration with all security stakeholders to restore peace.
