UI withdraws 226 students over abysmal academic performance

By Adeola Badru The Senate of the University of Ibadan has approved the withdrawal of 226 undergraduate students over poor academic performance in the 2024/2025 academic session. The decision was taken at a meeting of the university’s apex decision-making body held on Monday, during which the results of both graduating and non-graduating students were ratified. In its resolution, the Senate directed that all students with a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) below 1.0 be advised to withdraw from the institution. Following the approval, the affected students were denied access to the university’s portal for further registration, effectively bringing their academic programmes at the institution to an end. Findings indicated that the affected students span various faculties and levels of study, ranging from 100 to 500 level. A breakdown of the affected students shows that 79 are from the Faculty of Science, 45 from the Faculty of Technology, and 35 from the Faculty of Agriculture. The College of Medicine and the Faculty of Education recorded 18 students each, while 10 students were withdrawn from the Faculty of Renewable Natural Resources. In addition, nine students were affected in the Faculty of Arts, four in the Faculty of Economics and Management Sciences, three in the Faculty of Law, two in the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, and three in the Faculty of Environmental Design and Management. The Director of Public Communication at the University, Mrs Adejoke Akinpelu, when contacted, confirmed the development. She stated that the affected students were advised to withdraw strictly on academic grounds. “They were advised to withdraw across the faculties and programmes at all the levels because their CGPA fell below 1 point. It is a normal academic appraisal process,” she said.
