UEFA sanctions Tottenham over supporters’ Nazi gestures

By Enitan Abdultawab UEFA has imposed financial and disciplinary sanctions on Tottenham Hotspur following incidents involving three supporters during a Champions League fixture in Germany. The governing body confirmed that Spurs were fined £26,000 ($34,700) for what it described as “racist and/or discriminatory behaviour” by fans. An additional £1,966 ($2,600) penalty was issued after objects were thrown during the match. The incident took place on 28 January at Deutsche Bank Park, where Tottenham defeated Eintracht Frankfurt 2-0 in a Champions League encounter. According to UEFA, three individuals made Nazi salutes in the direction of Frankfurt supporters during the game. Beyond the fine, UEFA also handed Tottenham a suspended ban on selling away tickets in European competition. The measure will remain in place for a probationary period of one year, meaning any further breach could trigger its enforcement. Tottenham responded swiftly. In a statement, the North London club said the three individuals involved had been identified and issued indefinite bans under its internal disciplinary policy. “We can confirm that all three individuals found to be making Nazi salutes towards Eintracht Frankfurt fans have been identified and have received indefinite bans,” the club said. “The club stands firmly against all forms of discrimination and has therefore taken the strongest possible action.” Spurs further distanced themselves from the conduct, describing it as the behaviour of a small minority that does not reflect the club’s values or those of its wider fan base. The development comes amid increased vigilance across European competitions regarding discriminatory conduct. Just days earlier, Real Madrid opened an internal review after a supporter was reported to have made a similar gesture before their Champions League win over Benfica.
