By Progress Godfrey Galaxy Backbone (GBB) has marked two years of significant progress, transitioning from a traditional infrastructure provider to a strategic custodian of Nigeria’s sovereign digital backbone, with notable expansions in fibre connectivity, cloud services, and cybersecurity. Under the leadership of Managing Director, Prof. Ibrahim Adeyanju, the agency institutionalised the Integrated Digital Transformation Strategy (IDTS) 2023–2028, a framework designed to synchronise high-speed digital infrastructure with policy alignment to drive efficiency across the public sector. In a statement on Monday by its Head of Corporate Communications, Chidi Okpala, GBB highlighted its achievements in bridging the digital divide, particularly in underserved local governments and federal universities, while enhancing national redundancy and broadband scalability. On sovereign data, the agency optimised the 1Government Cloud platform to provide secure, domestic hosting for ministries, departments, and agencies. Over 100,000 civil servants now benefit from secure communications through GovMail, and 24/7 cybersecurity monitoring has strengthened the country’s defences against evolving digital threats. “Within two years, Galaxy Backbone significantly expanded national digital access. Broadband connectivity was delivered to nine underserved Local Government Areas under Project 774, extending inclusion to previously unserved communities. Fibre-to-Hostel projects were completed at the University of Lagos, University of Abuja, and University of Jos, supporting research and digital learning. Connectivity to strategic national assets, including Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport and federal secretariats, was also enhanced,” the statement said. GBB further strengthened the national fibre backbone through a strategic partnership with the West Indian Ocean Cable Company (WIOCC), improving redundancy and enabling scalable broadband expansion across more states and communities. Operational excellence has been recognised with over 20 awards, including the NET5.5G Pioneer Award and the Inaugural Artificial Intelligence Award. The agency also implemented the Government as a Platform (GaaP) framework, upgraded the Government Service Portal, achieved ISO recertification milestones, and introduced an Integrated Management System (IMS) to institutionalise governance, accountability, and service quality. “Purposeful leadership, aligned with national vision and supported by strategic partnerships, can translate ambition into enduring capability,” GBB said, reaffirming its commitment to deepening connectivity and expanding cloud infrastructure to secure Nigeria’s digital future.
