Tragedy as mother of quintuplets dies in Kano

By Bashir Bello KANO — Tragedy struck residents of Kano on Thursday as a woman, Hafsatu Yusuf, who delivered quintuplets in the state, was confirmed dead hours after childbirth. Hafsatu was said to have successfully delivered five babies—three boys and two girls—at the state government-owned Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital. The Public Relations Officer of the Kano State Ministry of Health, Nabilusi Abubakar, confirmed that the mother died from severe postpartum bleeding despite efforts by medical personnel to save her life. Abubakar said she developed complications shortly after delivery and could not be revived. According to him, “The patient developed complications after delivery and despite all medical interventions to save her life, unfortunately, she succumbed. “Although earlier medical scans indicated that the expectant mother was carrying triplets, additional babies were delivered as labour progressed, resulting in the birth of quintuplets—three boys and two girls,” he said. He added that the newborns are currently receiving intensive care at the hospital. The state government had earlier taken responsibility for the medical care of both the mother and her babies.
