By Benjamin Njoku Toyin Abraham has been honoured with the prestigious Nollywood Box Office Champion Award by the National Film and Video Censors Board, NFVCB, for her outstanding performance in “Oversabi Aunty,” which grossed over N1 billion, making her the first debut director in Nollywood to achieve this milestone. The award was presented to the actress days ago after the regulatory body also honoured another box office record breaker, Funke Akindele last month with a similar award. Speaking at the award presentation ceremony held in Lagos, Dr. Shaibu Husseini, Executive Director/Chief Executive Officer of NFVCB, praised Toyin’s dedication to her craft, saying her film is a testament to Nollywood’s growing strength and global recognition. Husseini said the recognition was part of the Board’s commitment to celebrating those who continue to raise the bar in storytelling. The NFVCB boss highlighted that ‘Oversabi Auntie’ has achieved an extraordinary milestone, grossing over one billion naira at the Nigerian box office—a feat he described as both a personal triumph for the actress and a strong indicator of Nollywood’s growing global potential. “We are celebrating Toyin Abraham Adejeyemi, whose film “Oversabi Aunty’ has achieved an extra-milestone of grossing over N1 billion in the box office. This accomplishment is only a personal triumph for her, but it’s a testament to growing strength , resilience and global recognition of Nollywood”, he said. He affirmed that the Board takes pride in supporting a thriving film culture that entertains, informs and contributes meaningfully to our national economy. Presenting the award to Toyin Ahraham, Olori Temitope Ogunwusi, wife of the Ooni of Ife, described “Oversabi Aunty” as a legacy and a wake-up call for parents to prioritize their loved ones. “The movie is beyond entertainment, it’s a legacy. You can’t watch the movie as a parent and you will remain the same. It’s a wake up call to parents. The young filmmakers should take their time to learn how to script, direct and tell their stories that are life-changing”, she said. In her acceptance speech, Toyin Abraham attributed her success to hard work, perseverance, and passion, saying every challenge has shaped her.
