...As Bode George, Mimiko, Fayemi, Kingibe, others hail ex-SGF’s legacies By Juliet Umeh President Bola Tinubu yesterday urged traditional rulers across the country to emulate the leadership qualities of elder statesman Oba Olu Falae, particularly in promoting unity, peace, and national cohesion. Tinubu made the call at the public presentation of Falae’s autobiography titled The Triumph of Grace. He was represented at the event by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume. Describing the occasion as more than a book launch, the President said it was “a celebration of a life defined by discipline, sacrifice, resilience, and unwavering commitment to the progress of our nation.” He said: “The unveiling of The Triumph of Grace offers a compelling portrait of a distinguished statesman, a revered monarch, and an enduring symbol of integrity and service.” Tinubu noted that Falae’s career in public service, including his roles as Secretary to the Government of the Federation and Minister of Finance, reflected intellectual depth and dedication to national development. He said: “His record in public office demonstrates uncommon discipline, sound judgment, and a commitment to national development that has left a lasting impact on our country.” He further praised Falae’s stewardship of the country’s economy, saying: “He brought to office a rare blend of intellectual rigour and practical policy insight, helping to steer the nation through complex fiscal challenges with prudence and clarity of vision.” On his current role as a traditional ruler, Tinubu said Falae remains “a custodian of culture and a respected voice in national discourse, bridging the gap between tradition and modern governance.” The President also highlighted Falae’s leadership in Afenifere, noting that: “He has consistently championed unity, good governance, and the advancement of Yoruba interests within the Nigerian federation. His story is a reflection of the Nigerian spirit, one of perseverance, resilience, and enduring hope.” Calling on traditional rulers to rise to current challenges, he said: “Our traditional institutions remain one of the most enduring pillars of our society. Royal fathers are not only custodians of culture and heritage, but also vital partners in governance. They must emulate Falae. At a time when our nation faces security and social challenges, their role in peace-building, conflict resolution, and fostering unity has become even more critical. Peace and security are collective responsibilities. Our royal fathers must continue to promote dialogue, discourage violence, and foster unity among diverse communities. Together, we can build a Nigeria where peace reigns, communities thrive, and every citizen feels safe and empowered.” Congratulating Oba Falae on the publication, Tinubu said the book would serve as a valuable guide for younger generations. “Through this autobiography, you have gifted the nation a record of wisdom, experience, and inspiration. Young Nigerians, in particular, will find lessons of perseverance, patriotism, and integrity in your story,” he added. In his review of the book, former Governor of Ondo State, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, described the autobiography as a major contribution to Nigeria’s historical and policy discourse. Mimiko said: “It would hardly be an exaggeration to suggest that the story of Nigeria in the last half century cannot be fully told without reference to the life and career of Oba Falae.” Mimiko said the 501-page book spans 22 chapters and captures Falae’s extensive journey through public service, economic management, politics, and traditional leadership. “The Triumph of Grace is not just a personal memoir; it is a comprehensive account of Nigeria’s political, economic, and ideological evolution over the past five decades,” he said. He noted that the book provides insight into key national issues, including development planning, structural adjustment debates, and governance challenges. “It offers rare perspectives on policy decisions and national debates, many of which remain relevant in addressing Nigeria’s current challenges,” Mimiko added. Describing Falae’s career trajectory as exemplary, he said it reflects “diligence, brilliance, and unwavering commitment to national service.” Earlier, Chairman of the occasion and former Head of State, Abdulsalami Abubakar, represented by former SGF Yayale Ahmed, identified patriotism, commitment to national development planning, and courage as defining elements of Falae’s legacy. “Without patriotism, this country is doomed. Chief Falae exemplifies what it means to serve the nation selflessly,” he said, urging a return to structured national development planning. Also in his speech, Governor of Ondo State, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, said: “The story of Nigeria can never be complete without Falae stories,” while he commended his legacies. In his remarks, former presidential candidate Babagana Kingibe said: “Falae was one of the best Presidents Nigeria never had.” Other prominent Nigerians at the event included PDP chieftain Bode George, former Ekiti State Governor Kayode Fayemi, traditional rulers including the Deji of Akure, as well as representatives of various state governments and other stakeholders.
