By Vincent Ujumadu Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, has assured Nigerians that roads being constructed under the administration of President Bola Tinubu will last up to 100 years due to improved construction methods and materials. Speaking during an inspection of the ongoing reconstruction of the Enugu–Onitsha Expressway, Umahi said road construction in the country is no longer business as usual, noting that the era of asphalt dominance is giving way to the use of concrete for greater durability. According to him, several major highways are now being built with reinforced concrete to ensure longevity and reduce maintenance costs. He also disclosed that the Awka–Enugu Expressway, funded through taxes paid by MTN Nigeria, would be completed in record time. “I am impressed with the work being done by the construction company, which is using concrete to deliver about 23 kilometres of road. The first 20 kilometres have been completed, and we now have a concrete road that will last for the next 100 years,” the minister said. Umahi explained that his continued inspection of road projects nationwide is aimed at ensuring Nigerians receive value for taxpayers’ money. He urged residents of the South-East geopolitical zone to appreciate the scale of infrastructure development being executed by the Tinubu administration, describing the projects as a lasting legacy. “Before now, this road was in terrible condition and people took to social media to complain. Now that the road has been rehabilitated, we want you to also go on social media to thank the President and be grateful to God,” he said. He added that showing appreciation for government efforts would encourage more development projects in the region and contribute to the South-East’s economic rise.
