The king of Nigeria! By Donu Kogbara

Having watched President Bola Tinubu traipsing around London and Windsor with King Charles of the United Kingdom, I cannot help thinking that what we were seeing was TWO monarchs, not one...because, let’s face it: Tinubu has undermined the opposition in Nigeria so effectively that this country can no longer be accurately described as a democracy. As a matter of fact, Tinubu is much more powerful than the man who was born royal and comes from a long line of majesties but now has a purely constitutional and frankly subservient role. King Charles is more or less at the beck and call of elected UK politicians. And, to some extent, beholden to the great British public. He hosts who they tell him to host. He signs what they tell him to sign. He travels where they tell him to travel. He is obliged to be law-abiding. He has to respond respectfully if they ask searching questions about his finances. And he was recently compelled to throw his brother, the former Prince Andrew, under a bus because his subjects were outraged by Andrew’s sleazy relationship with Jeffrey Epstein. Tinubu, on the other hand, can do whatever he likes when he likes. Tinubu can spend whatever he wants to spend, and has transferred his household and office from the national grid to solar while Nigerian citizens suffer endless electricity outages and worry about how to feed themselves and pay basic bills. Tinubu doesn’t have to answer to anyone. Bluntly put, Tinubu, his relatives and his cronies are pampered mandarins who are above the law, thanks to our weak judiciary, supine legislators, partisan “Independent” National Electoral Commission and other culprits. And my message to the Nigerian People is this: If you are willing to let him get away with this imperial behaviour, we might as well quit investing trillions in the charade the upcoming election looks set to be and simply organise a coronation for King Bola and Queen Remi!!! ... And the conqueror Last week on this page, I asked Vanguard readers to share their views about Tinubu’s conquest of Nigeria. Here are some of the replies I got. Asuefaa Sasime Yenagoa, Bayelsa state +234 810 707 5920 Tinubu has obviously surrounded himself with sycophants and incompetent people. Take the Ambassador list and posting without agreement from the receiving countries as example. Tinubu’s government unfortunately is enabling corruption by its conduct of prosecuting only political opponents and every pretence of corruption fight under this government is a ruse. My take is that Tinubu is a democratic dictator who would do everything possible to continue in office not minding the verdict of the electorate. Tinubu plans to be the only candidate on the ballot, exactly Abacha script with modifications, using sponsored agreived party members to approach our courts to cripple opposition. Mike from Mushin: +234 816 111 4572 Donu, the conquest is temporary and has a terminal date, especially if the opposition are united and better focused than they are now. Tinubu followed Abiola’s 1992 template of the role of wealth in politics. He targetted Lagos that had the potential of being the richest state. Wealth, power and political wisdom are essentials in this game of numbers. He bidded his time by sponsoring Buhari and later struck like a cobra, with the political elements in his favour. Confusion was in the PDP and he took great advantage of it. He is still taking advantage of all the confusion in the oppositions’ camp, presently, sustained by Atiku’s inordinate, self-centred ambition. Like Lagos, Tinubu would love Nigeria to be under his control! He brooks no opposition! He was credited to have said-when he sleeps, Lagos sleeps. Also, that his handkerchief is a symbol of Lagos! He also reportedly said he was richer than Osun State. But take it from me, should the opposition get their acts together, he would go the way of braggarts. Pride goes befall a fall. Atiku should please step down for Peter Obi and let us have a free and fair contest to put an end to all these nonsense in a country that is full of educated bold men. We dare APC to put their popularity to test in 2027. Nigeria is not a banana republic to continue to succumb to the whims and caprices of one man. Come 2027, let us turn it over against him. Nigeria should not only be seen to be free, it must be free indeed! We are still the same Nigerians who sent the military packing despite their maradonic tendencies! We are who we are. Before the 2027 presidential elections, Tinubu’s cup of antics will be full! May Nigeria never be forced to sleep when Tinubu is sleeping, IJN: Amen. DONU’S WORLD I have a YouTube channel. It’s called DONU’S WORLD. https://youtube.com/@donukogbara?si=bBm_IPdFZ_wUyKYq NIGERIA UNFILTERED – spicy commentaries on Naija issues – appears every Wednesday, while DONU’S WEEK appears on Fridays and is international as well as local and covers a mish-mash of soft and tough issues around my personal life, my work and my worldview. Two days ago on my Nigeria Unfiltered video, I wondered why we tend to blame the Presidency for everything that goes wrong and don’t direct much criticism at governors and local government chairmen who are equally responsible for a lot of our socio-economic woes. I was particularly scathing about the performances of Niger Deltan VIPs. Please check out my Donu’s World library (dating back to early 2024) on YouTube, plus the new videos I produce every week. I would love to hear your opinions and any constructive criticisms you may have to offer. And I will be very grateful if you “like”, subscribe and share!
