By Musa Ubandawaki, Sokoto SOKOTO—Thousands of families in Goronyo Local Government Area of Sokoto State received a major boost this Ramadan as the Minister of State for Works, Bello Goronyo, distributed cash, food items, and clothing materials worth ₦200 million to vulnerable households. The large-scale intervention, unveiled on Monday, is aimed at easing economic hardship and ensuring that families observe the fasting period with dignity. Speaking during the distribution, Goronyo described the initiative as part of his ongoing humanitarian outreach. “Fasting is a sacred pillar of Islam. It is not only a period of abstinence but also of compassion and generosity. This support is to ensure our people observe Ramadan in good condition, without the burden of hunger or lack,” he said. The minister encouraged beneficiaries to safely transport the items to their homes and share them with their families, emphasizing that the gesture was rooted in service and responsibility. Linking the initiative to national leadership, Goronyo said it mirrored the philosophy of “Renewed Hope” championed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. “Leadership is about touching lives. We must continue to uplift our people at every opportunity,” he stated, commending ongoing infrastructural and welfare-focused policies. The support package reached a broad spectrum of the community, including elders, women’s groups, youth, students, vigilante groups, security personnel, community volunteers, and APC officials in Goronyo LGA. Distributed items included bags of rice, millet, maize, clothing materials, and cash assistance. Dr. Bashir Achida, Special Adviser to the Governor on Economic Matters, praised the minister’s generosity and urged other wealthy Nigerians to emulate the example. “This is more than charity; it is empowerment and a lifeline,” he said. Beneficiaries also expressed gratitude. On behalf of the community, the District Head of Shinaka, Alhaji Abdullahi Durumbu, described the intervention as timely and impactful. “This support will go a long way in easing the burden on families during Ramadan. We appreciate the minister for standing with his people at a crucial time,” he said. Dignitaries at the event included the Goronyo Local Government Chairman, Alhaji Zubairu Yari; APC Youth Leader, Malam Nasiru Italy; Goronyo APC Chairman, Alhaji Sa’idu Muhammad; former Sokoto State House of Assembly Speaker, Alhaji Umar Shehu, among others. For many households in Goronyo, the ₦200 million support translated into meals at sunset, clothing for men and women, and a reminder that they have not been forgotten during the holy month. The intervention underscores the growing expectation that leadership is measured not only in policies but in lives directly touched.
