By Davies Iheamnachor PORT HARCOURT — Tension gripped Igwuruta Community in Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State after suspected herders killed a youth leader and injured others, sparking protests and security measures. The victim, Nchelem Samuel Festus, a former Secretary of Omuolu-Omunwei Community, was attacked on Tuesday along with other residents, including Charles Adiele, a member of a local vigilante group. The assailants reportedly fled the scene on motorcycles after the attack. On Thursday, community youths staged a peaceful protest demanding the cessation of cattle rearing, scrap-dump operations, and motorcycle activities in the area. In a communique read by Gilead Chimenem, the protesters condemned the violence and called for the arrest of those responsible. “The Igwuruta community is deeply saddened by the tragic murder of our son, Nchelem Samuel Festus, and ongoing criminal activities by these individuals,” Chimenem said. He warned that failure to act might compel the community to seek self-help but emphasized their commitment to the rule of law. Reacting to the unrest, Ikwerre LGA Chairman Charles Wobodo announced a temporary ban on motorcycle operations in Igwuruta between 6pm and 6am, effective immediately, citing security concerns. He urged residents to remain calm and allow security agencies to investigate. A senior police officer confirmed that several suspects had been arrested and investigations into the incident are ongoing.
