Restructuring only way forward for Nigeria, says Igbo leaders’ President

By Dennis Agbo President of the Igbo Leaders of Thought, Prof. Elochukwu Amucheazi, has reiterated that Nigeria’s economic and political challenges can only be resolved through restructuring the country along the lines of the 1963 constitution. In an exclusive interview with Vanguard, Amucheazi warned that a “Jihad” is ongoing in Nigeria, while both national administrators and the international community appear largely passive. He blamed the government for failures in electricity supply and rising petroleum prices, arguing that if all Nigerian refineries were operational, the recent Middle East crisis would not have severely impacted domestic commodity prices. “I expected Israel and the United States to be sympathetic to us, but we are watching. They may intervene regarding Nigeria’s insecurity, but they are distracted by the Middle East crisis. Meanwhile, the Jihad continues in Nigeria. The Fulani plan is to control oil and finance Jihad everywhere,” he said. Amucheazi also criticised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, noting that promises such as steady power supply remain unfulfilled despite four years in office. He further dismissed the notion that the 2027 general elections will automatically favor the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), despite 31 state governors being members. “Just because 31 states have governors from one party doesn’t mean everyone in those states belongs to that party,” he said. Amucheazi warned that the world is closely monitoring Nigeria, citing concerns over the continued detention of Nnamdi Kanu and ongoing Biafra agitations, which have gained unprecedented global attention. He advocated for a confederation of states as a viable solution, arguing that Nigeria is not truly a federation under the 1999 constitution, which he described as a decree. “If we can achieve a confederation, we can continue as one country, but proper adjustments must be made. Ndigbo should have autonomy. Even Rivers State and Aka Igbo—aren’t they Igbo? The Igbo are the largest in population,” he said. Amucheazi reaffirmed that the Igbo Leaders of Thought have consistently called for restructuring as the most viable path to resolving Nigeria’s political and economic crises.
