By Vincent Ujumadu The 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has drawn attention to the rare convergence of the Christian season of Lent and the Muslim holy month of Ramadan beginning on the same day in Nigeria. In a message shared on social media, Obi described the coincidence as more than a calendar alignment, calling it “a powerful symbol of shared sacrifice, reflection, and the possibility of national renewal.” He noted that both periods are traditionally marked by fasting, prayer, and thanksgiving, and referred to the overlap as a “double fast,” encouraging Nigerians to look beyond religious differences and recognise their shared humanity. Obi urged citizens to use the period for reflection on national challenges, including insecurity and economic hardship, while promoting compassion and support for vulnerable members of society. “Prayer alone is not enough; it must be paired with action,” he said, emphasising charity, forgiveness, and self-discipline as essential values that can contribute to national healing and social cohesion.
