Osahon Okunbo: Building platforms, creating outcomes

2026-03-02 - 06:38

By Yetunde Arebi “Genius is one percent inspiration and ninety-nine percent perspiration.” — Thomas Edison This quote aptly describes Dr. Osahon Okunbo, Vanguard’s 2025 Young Entrepreneur Awardee. A visionary whose work defies simple categorization, Dr. Okunbo moves seamlessly from engineering labs to boardrooms, from hospitality to energy infrastructure, from creative spaces to environmental recovery—all while maintaining a coherent vision: building systems that strengthen a nation. Innovation Dr. Okunbo’s instinct for innovation was evident long before titles and accolades defined him. As a young entrepreneur, he introduced ChargeBox—the UK’s pioneering phone-charging stations—to Nigeria, anticipating a need before it became obvious. Around the same period, he launched a travel and lifestyle magazine that reimagined Nigeria as vibrant, modern, and worth experiencing. These formative ventures taught him lessons that continue to guide his work today: spot opportunity early, stay curious, and pursue ideas persistently. Strategic Leadership Across Sectors Today, Osahon operates at the intersection of sectors critical to Nigeria’s stability and future. As Chairman of Vetrinox Capital, he drives strategic investments in energy, agriculture, and the built environment—sectors that form the backbone of economic growth. His engineering background brings precision; his worldview lends purpose. In his role as Executive Director at Pipeline Infrastructure Nigeria Limited, he has played a pivotal role in national efforts to curb illegal refining, secure energy corridors, and support environmental recovery in the Niger Delta. Though technically demanding and largely unseen, this work has profound impact—protecting communities, safeguarding industries, and strengthening national resilience. Hospitality and Creativity Dr. Okunbo’s ambitions extend beyond infrastructure and investment. In Abuja, he helped transform The Wells Carlton Hotel into one of the capital’s defining hospitality landmarks. In Lagos, he founded Live Lounge, the city’s first purpose-built comedy club, providing performers a space to refine their craft. Through Muse Studios, he supports emerging musicians, demonstrating his belief that creativity is essential to societal growth, not ornamental. Philanthropy and Talent Development At the heart of his philanthropic work is TOOF—the Osahon Okunbo Foundation—dedicated to advancing African creativity and nurturing the next generation of thinkers and storytellers. Through TOOF, he has supported exhibitions, platforms like the +234 Art Fair, the Benin Art Fair, and Elevate Africa, while helping power Nigeria’s presence at Abu Dhabi Art, affirming Nigerian creativity on the global stage. TOOF also nurtures literary talent. Its screenwriting grant offers emerging writers three months of structured mentorship, giving them the tools and guidance to craft ambitious, resonant work. These programs reflect Dr. Okunbo’s early entrepreneurial philosophy: when people are given space, structure, and belief, they rise. Cultural Leadership Beyond direct philanthropy, Dr. Okunbo contributes to institutions shaping Nigeria’s cultural future. He serves on the boards of the National Theatre of Nigeria, The Children’s Art Gallery, and Write Good Stories—platforms dedicated to heritage, imagination, and the stories that hold a society together. His involvement reflects a broader belief: infrastructure is not only physical; it is also cultural. A Unified Philosophy A single idea ties Dr. Okunbo’s diverse work together: people rise when the platform beneath them is strong enough. Whether engineering pipelines, managing investments, or supporting artists, he builds these platforms deliberately and intelligently, always with an eye on generational impact. To him, technical innovation and cultural development are not separate—they are all expressions of national progress and possibility. The Builder of Futures Dr. Okunbo is an engineer by training, an investor by instinct, a cultural patron by conviction, and above all, a builder—of opportunities, institutions, and futures. His story is not simply about personal success; it is about contribution—seeing Nigeria not only as it is but as it could be, and repeatedly choosing to build toward that horizon. It is this visionary approach that has earned him recognition at the Vanguard Personality of the Year Awards 2025, in the Young Entrepreneur of the Year category, an acknowledgment by the Board of Vanguard Editors of his transformative impact across sectors.
