Okpebholo hails Benin City’s $1m win at Bloomberg Mayor’s Challenge

By Ozioruva Aliu Benin City, the capital of Edo State, has gained international recognition after emerging among the top cities in the prestigious Bloomberg Mayor’s Challenge, securing a $1 million innovation award. The global competition attracted more than 600 cities worldwide, with only 25 cities from 20 countries making the final list. Benin City was also among only four African cities that reached the final stage. The award recognises cities that demonstrate bold, creative and proactive approaches to solving urban challenges and improving the lives of residents. In a statement issued on Sunday by the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Patrick Ebojele, the achievement was described as a major milestone that places Benin City on the global map of innovation and urban leadership. The statement quoted the Governor of Edo State, Monday Okpebholo, as saying the recognition reflects the state government’s commitment to innovation and its efforts to strengthen healthcare delivery across the state. “This recognition is a testament to innovation, resilience and the unwavering commitment of our team to transform healthcare delivery in Edo State. It reinforces that bold ideas from Benin City can compete and win on the global stage,” the governor said. Okpebholo congratulated the Edo State Ministry of Health and members of the team behind the initiative, noting that the award highlights the state’s growing reputation for forward-thinking governance and impactful public sector reforms. He also commended the people of Edo State for their continued support for the administration’s programmes and policies aimed at improving citizens’ welfare. “Congratulations to my hardworking team and to the great people of Edo State. The world is watching, and we are just getting started,” the governor added. The Bloomberg Mayor’s Challenge is regarded as one of the most competitive global platforms for cities to present innovative solutions to urban problems. Winning cities receive financial support and technical assistance to implement transformative ideas.
