Ogun Police launch probe as corps member dies after suspected abortion

By James Ogunnaike Ogun State Police Command on Thursday confirmed that it has commenced investigation into the death of a female corps member, Victoria Ariyo, who was serving in Abeokuta South Local Government Area. Ariyo was alleged to have died from complications arising from an abortion procedure, though authorities say a full investigation is ongoing to ascertain the circumstances surrounding her death. It was gathered that the deceased had reportedly terminated a pregnancy before developing complications that eventually led to her demise. It was further gathered that her remains had been interred at Kobape Cemetery, along the Kobape–Sagamu road in Abeokuta. The incident comes barely a month after the mysterious death of another corps member, Adeleye Mary, who was also serving in the same local government area. Mary, until her death, was attached to a television station in the state capital. Sources disclosed that Mary was found lifeless in her residence located close to her place of primary assignment, with the cause of death yet to be determined. Both deceased corps members were said to be close friends. A source familiar with the incidents said, “The first lady, Mary, died at her residence, which is not far from her PPA. They found her lifeless body in the apartment and, up till now, nobody can tell the cause of her death. “However, Victoria, who died on Tuesday, was said to have died from complications arising from an abortion procedure. “We also gathered that an NYSC official, believed to have been in a romantic relationship with the late Victoria, which led to the pregnancy and subsequent abortion, has been arrested by the police at the State Command Headquarters, Eleweran, Abeokuta.” However, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, while confirming the incident, declined to comment on the alleged arrest. “I can confirm that the case of the demise of Victoria Ariyo is under investigation by the State Criminal Investigation Department,” Babaseyi stated. Meanwhile, the Ogun State NYSC Public Relations Officer, Mr. Emmanuel Igba, said he was unaware of the incidents, stressing that he was currently on leave. “I am not aware of these incidents as I am on leave and will not resume until April,” he said. Efforts to reach the State NYSC Coordinator, Mrs Olayinka Nasamu, proved abortive, as calls to her aide were not answered, while messages sent as of the time of filing this report had yet to receive any response.
