2026-02-24 - 18:26

By Obas Esiedesa, Abuja The Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) and the Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (NEITI) have reiterated their commitment to enhancing transparency and accountability in the ongoing 2025 oil licensing round. The commitment was affirmed during a visit to NUPRC’s Abuja office by NEITI Executive Secretary, Hon. Musa Sarkin Adar. Speaking at the meeting, NUPRC Chief Executive Mrs. Oritsemeyiwa Eyesan highlighted internal reforms aimed at improving efficiency and regulatory oversight. She revealed that the Commission has launched a 60-day programme to fully digitise its internal communications and operational processes. “Once we reach day 60, there will be no paper trail within the Commission. All transmissions will be electronic, which ensures speed and traceability,” she said. Eyesan noted that the digital transition has already improved compliance in revenue monitoring and royalty payments. Adar emphasised the need for closer collaboration between NUPRC and NEITI, urging regular information sharing to boost transparency and investor confidence in Nigeria’s upstream sector. He called for strict enforcement of the Petroleum Industry Act and proactive participation in the 2026 global Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative conference to align with international transparency standards. Both leaders agreed that stronger data sharing and cooperative oversight are key to ensuring the integrity of the 2025 Licensing Round and the broader Nigerian oil sector.
