*Say workers, other Nigerians must shape nation’s future By Victor Ahiuma-Young & Favour Ulebor No fewer than 13 affiliates of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria, TUC, alongside some employers’ federations, have formed a grassroots movement aimed at mobilising workers and other Nigerians. The movement known as Working People United, WPU, unveiled over the weekend in Abuja, is designed to rally support for the economic policies of President Bola Tinubu ahead of the 2027 general elections. The launch brought together labour leaders, employers, artisans, traders, market women, youth leaders and professionals from across the country. Organisers said the platform was created to amplify the voices of ordinary Nigerians, encourage greater participation of workers in governance, and promote national development by supporting policies they believe will strengthen the country’s economic foundation. Speaking, the coordinator of the movement, Prince Williams Akporeha, said that at present the platform includes 13 industrial unions and senior staff associations affiliated with the NLC and TUC, as well as about five employers’ federations. According to him, “We have many others unions and groups who are discussing with us either to identify with us openly or assist in other capacities. We are very pleased with the nobility and patriotism behind the movement. “Like we stated in our flag-off address, the movement represents the collective voice of workers, artisans, traders, farmers, professionals, transporters and all hardworking citizens who form the backbone of our nation’s economy. “Our major aim is to mobilise Nigerians across different sectors of the economy to participate actively in shaping the nation’s future while supporting leadership committed to economic stability and national development.” Akporeha said the administration of Tinubu had taken bold steps to reposition Nigeria for sustainable growth since assuming office on May 29, 2023. “Leadership is never about choosing the easy path; it is about choosing the path that secures the future of the nation. The reforms introduced by the administration demonstrate courage and foresight,” he stated. The coordinator also highlighted several initiatives aimed at supporting workers and vulnerable Nigerians, including expanded social investment programmes and direct cash transfer schemes. He noted that “millions of low-income households are already benefiting from financial support designed to cushion the effects of ongoing economic reforms while broader policies take effect.” Continuing, Akporeha contended that many of the government’s policies aimed at improving access to credit for small businesses, traders and artisans were gradually expanding economic opportunities at the grassroots level. “Working People United therefore stands as a platform to enlighten Nigerians about these reforms, promote constructive engagement between government and citizens, and mobilise support for policies that will move the nation forward. “As we look ahead to 2027, this movement will play a critical role in ensuring that the progress currently being made is sustained and strengthened. “We call on all Nigerians who believe in progress, stability and national development to join this movement. Together, we will amplify the voice of the working people and build a stronger Nigeria for generations yet unborn,” he added. Earlier at the launch, a representative of the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria, Zino Onaemor, said the movement aims to unite working-class Nigerians in support of reforms designed to strengthen the economy. Similarly, spokesperson for the Natural Oil and Gas Suppliers Association of Nigeria, Chinedu Ukadike, said the platform would help galvanise support for government policies while also advocating effective implementation for the benefit of ordinary Nigerians. Former Nigerian ambassador to Mozambique, Madagascar and Mauritius, Yamah Musa, said the group supports ongoing governance reforms and believes broader citizen participation will strengthen accountability and national development. In his remarks, National President of the Petroleum Products Retail Outlets Owners Association of Nigeria, Billy Gillis-Harry, said the movement would continue to mobilise Nigerians at the grassroots level to support reforms aimed at rebuilding the economy and strengthening national institutions.
