By Luminous Jannamike ABUJA — Former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, has condemned reports of abuse involving street children in Cross River State, describing the situation as a reflection of broader social challenges requiring urgent attention. His reaction follows reports and images showing young boys, commonly referred to as “Skolombo children,” being restrained and subjected to harsh treatment, sparking public concern over the welfare of vulnerable children. In a statement on Wednesday, Obi said the development highlights the need for stronger child protection measures and greater societal responsibility. “These reports are deeply troubling and underscore the need for us to do more to protect the children of our nation,” he said. He noted that many children living on the streets are often products of neglect and hardship, stressing that they should be supported through education and social interventions rather than stigmatised. Obi also drew attention to the large number of out-of-school children in Nigeria, describing it as a significant challenge with long-term implications for national development. He called for a more compassionate and structured approach, urging authorities to prioritise protection, education, and rehabilitation for vulnerable children. “We must move from neglect to responsibility and ensure that every child is given an opportunity for a better future,” he added. Obi emphasised that the issue extends beyond Cross River State, urging stakeholders to work collectively to safeguard the welfare and future of children across the country.
