By Ayo Onikoyi Nigerian pop star Asake has opened up about the challenges he faced as a teenager while chasing his music dreams, revealing that his father’s disapproval didn’t stop him from pursuing a career in music. In a recent interview with content creator Korty EO, the 31-year-old ‘Lungu Boy’ hitmaker reflected on leaving home at 15, despite the tension it caused with his family. “The father who gave birth to me, he is way more stubborn than I am, so I could not look at his face. We were close when we were younger, but it got to a time when I wanted to leave home to do what I am doing now, but my father said no. I took off regardless,” Asake said. He added, “...I was 15. I was just focused on where I was going, and there was nothing anyone could tell me.” Asake rose to fame in 2020 with his hit song Lady and joined YBNL in February 2022. He has since released three studio albums: Mr Money With The Vibes (2022), Work of Art (2023), and Lungu Boy (2024). The award-winning Afrobeats star is widely regarded as one of the leading voices in the Nigerian music scene, earning numerous nominations and accolades for his craft. This year, he was nominated for the Grammy Awards in the Best African Music Performance category but lost to fellow Nigerian artist Tems.
