Middle East Tensions: Military, police strengthen security in FCT

By Kingsley Omonobi ABUJA — Security has been reinforced across the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) following heightened tensions in the Middle East involving the United States, Israel and Iran. On Tuesday, troops of the Guards Brigade and the Army Headquarters Garrison were deployed to strategic locations within Abuja, while police operatives increased patrols in key districts. A monitoring tour across parts of the city, including Wuse II, AYA, Utako and the Berger area, showed military vehicles and personnel positioned at major junctions, roundabouts and public facilities. Security presence was also visible around places of worship and commercial centres. Residents observed the increased deployment as they went about their daily activities, with authorities describing the measures as precautionary. The security reinforcement followed directives from the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, who on Sunday instructed Commissioners of Police across the 36 states and the FCT to heighten surveillance and intelligence gathering in response to global developments. In a statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Benjamin Hundeyin, the IGP called for enhanced visibility policing around worship centres and public spaces, as well as closer collaboration with traditional and religious leaders. He reassured Nigerians of the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to safeguarding lives and property, stressing that Nigeria would not serve as a theatre for foreign conflicts. “While Nigeria remains stable and its internal security situation firmly under control, the Force has reinforced proactive, intelligence-led policing measures across the country,” the statement read. Citizens were urged to remain calm, vigilant and law-abiding, and to report any suspicious activities to the nearest police formation. The increased security presence comes amid international reports of escalating military exchanges in the Middle East, which have drawn global attention and prompted precautionary measures in several countries. Authorities in Nigeria maintain that the situation within the country remains under control, with security agencies on alert to prevent any breach of peace.
