By Chimaobi Nwaiwu NNEWI — Concerned by the rising wave of fire outbreaks destroying markets and livelihoods, the Onitsha Chamber of Commerce Industry Mines and Agriculture has called for urgent proactive measures to curb the menace across Anambra State. The Chamber made the call following a recent fire incident that gutted the Plumbing and Sanitary Wares Market at Bridge Head Market, Onitsha, leading to the loss of goods worth millions of naira. In a statement issued by its President, Chinedu Nwokoye, ONICCIMA expressed deep concern over the recurring incidents, describing them as a major threat to traders, businesses, and the wider commercial ecosystem of the state and the South-East region. The Chamber noted that the frequency of such disasters exposes the vulnerability of major markets in Anambra and highlights the urgent need for a comprehensive and functional fire control system. Lamenting the scale of destruction and persistent losses, the organised private sector body said delays in emergency response during fire outbreaks have raised serious concerns about the capacity and readiness of fire services, particularly in commercial hubs like Onitsha. ONICCIMA, therefore, urged the Anambra State Government to decentralise fire service units by establishing fully equipped stations in Onitsha and other major markets across the state to ensure rapid response in emergencies. It also called for stricter enforcement of fire safety regulations in markets and commercial buildings, including mandatory installation of fire alarms, extinguishers, and other safety equipment by business owners. The Chamber further recommended sustained investment in fire hydrant infrastructure and routine maintenance, as well as regular electrical inspections to prevent fire hazards. According to the statement, market associations should establish joint emergency response committees, introduce fire alert systems, and conduct periodic fire drills and safety training for traders. It also encouraged the business community to develop neighbourhood safety networks, invest in shared fire control resources, and collaborate with relevant authorities on emergency preparedness. Describing the recurring incidents as a “wake-up call,” ONICCIMA reaffirmed its commitment to partnering with stakeholders to push for policy reforms and infrastructure upgrades aimed at protecting lives, businesses, and the economic backbone of Anambra State.
