By Olasunkanmi Akoni Lagos State Government has affirmed that the recently launched Bus Reform Initiative (BRI) on the Lekki–Epe Corridor is designed to reduce traffic congestion, enhance safety, lower environmental pollution, and boost economic productivity across the State. The initiative restricts operations on the corridor to medium- and high-capacity buses, while mini buses, popularly known as “Korope,” are limited to inner routes. The move has sparked public discussions and protests from some mini bus operators. Speaking at a stakeholders’ meeting convened by the Ministry of Transportation, Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Sola Giwa, explained that the BRI is aligned with the Lagos Strategic Transportation Master Plan, prioritizing structured, regulated, and sustainable mass transit systems across roads, rail, and waterways. “Instead of ten smaller buses operating independently, one large-capacity bus can transport the same number of passengers. This reduces vehicles on the road, eases traffic congestion, lowers pollution, and improves economic productivity,” Giwa said. He stressed that government intervention was necessary to ensure safety, accountability, and data-driven planning. Prior to the pilot phase, transport unions and stakeholders were invited to form structured groups for registration, QR code issuance, and effective monitoring. To date, 10 transport groups have registered and are participating in the pilot phase. Giwa urged other operators to formalize their operations, emphasizing inclusivity and collaboration as central to the reform. The ministry also appealed to residents and transporters to embrace the BRI as a step toward a safer, more efficient, and globally competitive transportation system in Lagos, reaffirming its commitment to ongoing stakeholder engagement.
