Abuja — Lauretta Onochie, former aide to late President Muhammadu Buhari, has publicly expressed support for former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, urging that due process be respected amid his impending appearance before the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission. In a statement shared online, Onochie criticised what she described as the use of security agencies without legal authority, noting that such actions raise concerns about the health of Nigeria’s democracy. She referenced a reported attempt by the Department of State Services to arrest El-Rufai and said the developments send troubling signals to citizens who value constitutional order. “Whatever the political differences that may exist, Nigeria is not a monarchy. It is a constitutional democracy. No citizen — whether in government or in opposition — should be subjected to intimidation, harassment, or selective prosecution,” she said. Onochie called on Nigerians to recognise that political pluralism and opposition activity are not crimes, emphasizing the importance of transparency and lawful proceedings. She urged that any allegations against El-Rufai be made clear, charges be lawful, and evidence be tested in open court. She also addressed members and supporters of the African Democratic Congress, stressing unity, discipline, and commitment to democratic principles during challenging political times. “Democracy must be defended — not selectively applied. Nigeria belongs to all of us,” Onochie said, affirming that El-Rufai is not alone and that many Nigerians support fairness and due process.
