Kebbi orders political appointees eyeing 2027 elections to resign by March 31

The directive was contained in a circular issued from the Office of the Secretary to the State Government on March 2, 2026, signed by the Director of the State Executive Council, Kabiru Hassan Wasagu, on behalf of the Secretary to the State Government. According to the circular, the move aligns with existing laws and regulations to ensure due process and proper compliance for public office holders seeking elective positions. Those affected include the Chief of Staff, Commissioners, Special Advisers, Senior Special Assistants, chairmen and members of statutory commissions, heads of extra-ministerial departments and agencies, permanent secretaries, local government chairpersons, and other political appointees. All affected officials have been instructed to submit formal resignation letters to the Office of the Secretary to the State Government for appropriate action. The circular also called on accounting officers and heads of government establishments to widely publicize the directive to ensure strict compliance. The move is part of early preparations for the 2027 general elections, aimed at guaranteeing that political office holders adhere to legal provisions before declaring their political ambitions.
