Mirabel Centre, Nigeria’s first Sexual Assault Referral Centre, SARC, has reached a major milestone of 10,000 sexual violence survivors, describing it as a moment of impact and reflection. The Centre said besides the trust victims have in them, “it reminds us of the scale of sexual violence in our society and how much more work remains.” The Founder of Mirabel Centre, Itoro Eze-Anaba, made the points in a statement on Tuesday. Eze-Anaba added that many survivors face stigma, fear, limited access to services, and weak justice outcomes, leaving countless cases unreported. For many survivors, Mirabel Centre is the first place where they are believed, protected, and treated with dignity, the statement noted. “However, demand for services continues to grow, underscoring the need for sustained funding, stronger policies, and collective action.” The Centre “called on government, healthcare providers, law enforcement, the private sector, and communities to treat sexual violence as a national emergency and prioritise survivor-centred responses.” Mirabel Centre, established in 2013, provides free, survivor-centred medical, psychosocial, forensic, and legal support, regardless of age, gender, or background. Beyond crisis response, the Centre works in prevention education, professional training, and advocacy to improve survivor care, accountability, and long-term outcomes. Vanguard News
