Former PDP gubernatorial candidate Umbugadu quits party; PDP reacts

By Edwin Philip, Lafia LAFIA — Dr. David Umbugadu, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) gubernatorial candidate in the 2023 Nasarawa State election, has officially resigned from the party, citing internal conflicts and leadership challenges. In a letter made public on Sunday, Umbugadu explained that the decision followed consultations with his supporters and was necessary to secure a “solid and clear political path.” He expressed gratitude to the PDP for backing his two previous bids for governor and appealed that his resignation be received in good faith. “The confounding situation within the party made my political destination hazy, warranting a clear path forward,” he stated. Umbugadu’s resignation was not unexpected, as he has been associated with prominent politicians including Minister of the FCT, Barr. Nyesom Wike, Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang, and Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Fintiri, many of whom have aligned with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Reacting, the PDP’s Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Hajiya Farida Umar, acknowledged the resignation but affirmed the party’s resolve. “The PDP has received the resignation of its former governorship candidate in Nasarawa State, Hon. David Emmanuel Umbugadu,” she said. “While this development is painful, it does not discourage us. True political loyalty is tested during moments of transition, and the strength of a political movement lies in its ideology, structure, and committed members, not individuals.” Farida emphasized that the PDP remains focused on reorganizing and presenting a credible candidate for the 2027 gubernatorial election. She urged party members to remain calm, united, and committed to the party’s vision. “History and posterity will judge political decisions, but today our priority is strengthening structures and preparing for greater success ahead,” she added.
