A 52nd-minute strike from substitute Temitope Folarin secured maximum points for Ikorodu City FC against Nigeria Premier Football League leaders Rivers United FC. The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the Matchday 30 clash at Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Onikan, ended 1–0, boosting the Oga Boys’ hopes of securing a continental ticket. Ikorodu City started brightly and pushed forward in search of an early goal, but Rivers United’s disciplined defence kept the hosts at bay throughout the opening half. With the first half ending goalless, coach Bright Ozadegbe introduced Folarin after the break, replacing academy player Dennis Mse in the 46th minute. The substitution proved decisive as Folarin struck in the 52nd minute, capitalising on a loose ball after goalkeeper’s save from Salami Farouk’s goal-bound effort. Speaking after the match, Ozadegbe said the support from home fans played a significant role in the victory. “It’s always a good feeling to play at home and defeat a team like Rivers United. That makes the victory even more satisfying. “It took time before the goal arrived. There were chances, but when it came I told the boys to remain calm against an experienced side. “Rivers United have a very good coach, so we knew we could not afford to lose concentration at any moment in the game,” he said. On achieving results in spite of limited finances, Ozadegbe credited the club’s structure and youth development system. “The biggest mystery in the NPFL is Ikorodu City. We have a strong structure and an academy producing players ready for the senior team. “The philosophy is the same from the academy to the senior side, which helps our players meet expectations when they step up. “In all respect to Rivers United, we knew it would be difficult, but the boys executed the plan and deserved the victory. “Our ambition is to remain in the continental qualification zone and we will do everything possible to stay there,” he said. Match winner Folarin said he aimed to make an impact after coming on. “The coach asked me to be creative and make a difference. I was determined to score today and I’m grateful the goal eventually came,” he said. Ikorodu City now sit third with 48 points, four points behind leaders Rivers United, who have recorded 13 wins, nine draws and eight defeats. (NAN)
