By Nnasom David The Federal Government has awarded a N21.68 billion contract for the construction of the new corporate headquarters of the National Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) in Abuja. The announcement was made on Thursday by the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, during the groundbreaking ceremony for the project. The initial phase of the project was awarded to Messrs NHD Interbiz Projects Limited at a total cost of N21,684,314,839.40, inclusive of all taxes, with a completion timeline of 30 months. The minister said the new headquarters would consolidate NAMA’s administrative and operational functions into a modern, purpose-built facility to improve efficiency, enhance safety oversight, and enable real-time management of Nigeria’s airspace. “For too long, our agencies have operated in silos and in structures that do not reflect their strategic importance. This project is a declaration of intent and a tangible demonstration of our commitment to modernising the critical infrastructure that underpins the safety, efficiency and growth of Nigerian aviation,” he said. The facility will integrate executive management offices with a state-of-the-art Air Traffic Management Centre, providing a secure, technology-driven environment for air navigation services. Keyamo stated that the project followed the Public Procurement Act 2007, with a transparent and competitive tendering process. He assured that the contractor would be held to the highest standards of quality and timeliness throughout the project. He added, “This development will create jobs, stimulate economic activity, enhance national asset security and strengthen investor confidence in the aviation sector. We expect the contractor to deploy the highest level of professional and technical competence in delivering a project that will stand the test of time.” Managing Director of NAMA, Engr Farouq Umar, noted that NAMA’s administrative headquarters had operated from Lagos for over two decades since its establishment in 1999. Following a government directive to relocate the agency to the Federal Capital Territory, a relocation process formally began in 2020, creating a need for a permanent headquarters in Abuja. He said, “For the past six years, our staff have operated from temporary facilities in Abuja, yet we have continued to deliver safe, efficient, and reliable air navigation services. The new facility will consolidate our air traffic control operations by collapsing the two existing Area Control Centres in Lagos and Kano into a single, centralized hub, creating a more cohesive and efficient ‘One FIR’ for Nigeria.”
