By Edwin Philip, Lafia LAFIA — The Nasarawa State Government has assured residents that the persistent power outages affecting parts of the state, particularly the capital, Lafia, will soon be resolved. Governor Abdullahi Sule said the government has put in place institutional frameworks and other measures to address the situation and restore stable electricity supply. Speaking during a bi-monthly press briefing at the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Press Centre in Lafia, the governor explained that some electricity installations vandalised by criminals are currently being repaired to improve power supply. The governor, who was represented by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Affairs, Peter Ahemba, appealed to residents to remain calm, noting that the government has listened to complaints about the poor electricity situation in the state capital. His assurance comes about a week after residents under the Nasarawa Southern Residents group staged a protest in Lafia over poor power supply and deteriorating infrastructure. The protesters were later addressed by the Permanent Secretary at the Government House. As part of efforts to address the issue, Governor Sule recently inaugurated the leadership of the Nasarawa State Electricity Regulatory Commission (NASERC) and tasked the body with tackling the problem of epileptic power supply in the state. Residents have lamented that the persistent outages have negatively affected businesses and daily activities. On security, the governor’s aide said the administration remains committed to tackling insecurity through collaboration with security agencies, noting that the state has recorded relative peace as a result of such efforts. Ahemba also reacted to the reported defection of the two-time governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Dr. David Ombugadu, to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), attributing the development to the achievements of the Sule administration, which he said have weakened opposition in the state.
