By Ozioruva Aliu BENIN CITY — The Nigeria Police Force, Edo State Command, has ordered an investigation into a bullying incident involving a student at Igbinedion Education Centre. The incident, which occurred last Friday, involved two students allegedly bullying a fellow student, with a video of the act later circulating on social media. Although the school management has since announced the expulsion of the students involved, and the Edo State Ministry of Education has set up a five-man panel to investigate the matter, the police said they would proceed with their own inquiry without waiting for a formal complaint from the victim’s parents. In a statement issued on Sunday, the Police Public Relations Officer, Ene Ikoedem, said the Commissioner of Police in the state, Monday Agbonika, had directed the Divisional Police Officer in the area to begin a detailed investigation. “The Edo State Police Command is aware of the viral video circulating on social media showing a disturbing incident of bullying involving a schoolboy at Igbinedion Secondary School,” the statement said. It added that while the management of the school had already expelled the students involved as part of disciplinary measures, the police would still carry out a comprehensive investigation into the incident. The command assured the public that anyone found culpable would face the law in accordance with the provisions guiding juvenile offences. “The Edo State Police Command totally condemns acts of bullying, violence or intimidation among students, and anyone found culpable will be dealt with in accordance with the law,” the statement added.
