By Ochuko Akuopha ASABA – THE Aniocha–Oshimili Elders’ Association in Delta has lamented what it termed as the escalating proliferation of drugs and narcotics among youths in the state. In a statement by its President, Sir Clement Okonjo and Secretary, Chief Chris Biose, the association, also known as ‘Izu Ikei Aniocha–Oshimili’ described the growing trend as alarming, calling on government and stakeholders to take urgent steps to check it. It called for clear articulation of comprehensive strategy for combating drug abuse and trafficking. The statement noted that what was once perceived as an isolated problem has evolved into a widespread and systemic threat affecting families, public safety, social cohesion, and the long-term stability of our constituency. “We consider this development a matter of urgent public interest requiring coordinated and sustained intervention by all tiers of government and law enforcement agencies” it said. The statement held that the increasing cases of youth involvement in crime, violence, and antisocial behavior were linked to substance abuse. The association warmed that the approach of the 2027 election season heightens the risk of drug-dependent youths being exploited for political violence, noting that unauthorized and makeshift settlements in certain areas had contributed to security vulnerabilities. The association lauded the Delta State Government for its efforts in addressing unauthorized and illegally occupied makeshift settlements in parts of the state capital territory and the support of traditional institutions, particularly the Asagba of Asaba, in advocating moral discipline and community vigilance.
