Court remands nurse over corps member’s death in Ogun

By James Ogunnaike A 37-year-old nurse, Kehinde Adesanya, who was allegedly involved in the unlawful abortion that allegedly led to the death of a 23-year-old corps member serving in Ogun State, Victoria Ariyo, has been remanded for 60 days at the correctional centre, Ibara, Abeokuta pending the legal advice from the State Directorate of Public Prosecution. Adesanya was on Thursday arraigned before the Magistrate Court at Isabo, Abeokuta, on four counts charge bordering on conspiracy, supply of drugs for unlawful abortion and murder of Ariyo. The deceased is said to have died from complications allegedly arising from illegal abortion. The late corps member was alleged to have been involved in a romantic relationship with the Abeokuta South Local Government Inspector of the NYSC, Abass Olalekan, which eventually led to pregnancy and subsequent unlawful abortion that led to her death. Olalekan was arrested and arraigned on Monday before Magistrate A. K Araba, on a two-count charge of conspiracy and attempt to procure abortion but he pleaded not guilty and was granted a bail of N500,000. The charge sheet reads, “COUNT I: That you KEHINDE ADESANYA ‘F’ and others at large, between January to March, 2026 at Ikereku area Laderin Abeokuta in the Abeokuta Magisterial District did conspire among yourselves to commit Felony to wit; Abortion and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under section 516 of the Criminal Code Laws of Ogun State of Nigeria, 2006. “COUNT II: That you KEHINDE ADESANYA ‘F’ and others now at large, on the same date, time and place in the aforementioned Magisterial District did Unlawfully Attempt to Procure abortion by supplying Ariyo Victoria Olapeju ‘F drugs and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 230 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Ogun State of Ogun State of Nigeria, 2006. “COUNT III: That you KEHINDE ADESANYA ‘F’ and others at large, between January to March, 2026 at Ikereku area, Laderin Abeokuta in the Abeokuta Magisterial District, did conspire among yourselves to commit Felony to wit; Murder and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 324 of the Criminal Code Laws of Ogun State of Nigeria, 2006. “COUNT IV: That you KEHINDE ADESANYA ‘F’ and others at large, between January to March 2026 at Ikereku area Laderin Abeokuta in the Abeokuta Magisterial District did unlawfully kill one Ariyo Victoria Olapeju ‘F’ Aged 23yrs by giving her drugs for abortion and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 319 of the Criminal Code Laws of Ogun State of Nigeria, 2006.” Standing trial before Magistrate O Sam-Obaleye, the police counsel Solomon Babalola urged the court for an order to remand the defendant for 60 days in the first instance at the Ibara Correctional Centre pending advice from the State Director of Public Prosecution (DPP). Babalola told the court that the defendant committed the offences between January and March, at Ikereku area, Laderin of Abeokuta, adding that the drugs allegedly led to the death of Ariyo. According to him, the offences contravene Sections 516, 230, 324 and 319 of the Criminal Code Laws of Ogun State, 2006. The Magistrate, Mrs O.O. Sam-Obaleye, granted the application and ordered that the defendant be remanded at the Ibara Correctional Centre, pending legal advice from the State DPP. The case was adjourned to May 26, 2026.
