By Omeiza Ajayi The ruling All Progressives Congress APC has unveiled an ambitious digital media strategy aimed at reaching 90 million Nigerians globally as it prepares for its National Convention this weekend. Chaired by the Governor of Niger State, Hon. Mohammed Umar Bago, and co-chaired by the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu, the party’s Digital and New Media Committee, held its inaugural meeting on Tuesday to set a new benchmark for political communication in Africa. The committee’s mandate extends beyond the upcoming convention, focusing on a digital broadcast strategy hinged on pillars of dominance, coverage, mobilization and intelligence. Governor Bago revealed that the committee’s funding has been significantly increased to ensure the party’s message resonates far beyond Nigeria’s shores. “The mandate is very clear – to deliver APC. We have provided an additional N500m to this committee to project ourselves beyond the National Convention. In fact, we will raise N1bn. We created a bar, and we have raised the bar. Please do not hesitate to continue planning this party. We are setting an agenda for Africa”, he stated. Bago also noted the party’s rapid expansion and its growing influence across the sub-nationals. “Today we received the 32nd governor for the APC, and tomorrow we will receive the 33rd,” he added. The Deputy Speaker, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu emphasized that the committee’s role is central to the party’s connectivity with its grassroots members. He charged the digital team to utilize every available platform to showcase the administration’s achievements and the party’s democratic credentials. “We are depending on you so much to reach millions of our members in their homes. It is your duty to use all digital platforms, without restrictions, to showcase what we have done, and not just about the convention. We are not just doing a convention. We are showcasing to the world that there is a party in Africa that believes in real democracy for the people”, he stated. The committee’s leaders indicated that this outreach programme is designed to be comparable to the sophisticated digital operations of the Democratic or Republican parties in the United States.
