Chelsea coach Rosenior calls for discipline after consecutive red cards

By Emmanuel Okogba Chelsea head coach Liam Rosenior has admitted his side must improve discipline and defensive focus after suffering another setback in their Premier League campaign, losing to Arsenal with ten men on the pitch. The Blues had gone ten matches without a dismissal under Rosenior, but recent weeks have seen two red cards in consecutive games, disrupting rhythm and costing valuable points. First was Wesley Fofana’s 72nd minute red card against Burnley. Against Arsenal, Pedro was sent off in the second half, leaving Chelsea exposed and unable to recover. Reflecting on the defeat, Rosenior said: “I think it’s clear where our strengths are and what we need to improve on. We conceded two goals from set-plays, which has ultimately cost us the game, and it’s really disappointing to have another red card. These are things we’ve spoken about, because there is a lot of good [in our play], but I don’t want to be sat here talking about how well we’ve played every week without picking up points.” He added: “It’s disappointing for Pedro because he’s a very, very good player and you want him on the pitch. Until that moment, he was actually causing Arsenal problems. The frustrating thing for us is that it’s not just today, but we’re going to miss him against Aston Villa. It’s not just Pedro, though. As a group, and me as the leader, we have to take more accountability for some of the decision-making in terms of our discipline. And the goals that we’re conceding, not just today, some of them are not acceptable at this level.” Chelsea face a crucial run of fixtures in both domestic and European competitions. With squad rotation already a challenge, Rosenior will be keen to ensure his players avoid unnecessary suspensions that could weaken the team’s chances.
