Champions League: Failing to beat Galatasaray would be catastrophic for Liverpool – Danny Murphy

By Emmanuel Okogba Former Liverpool midfielder and club legend Danny Murphy has warned that elimination from the UEFA Champions League against Galatasaray tonight would spell disaster for Arne Slot and his time at the club. Speaking on talkSPORT, Murphy described the match as make-or-break, stating that failure to progress would effectively end Liverpool’s campaign and severely damage Slot’s position. “If they were to not go through against Galatasaray tonight, it would be a catastrophe for him. There’s no comeback,” Murphy said. “I think that would be... the end of the season. I really believe that.” While insisting Slot should not be sacked regardless of tonight’s result, Murphy acknowledged the mounting pressure on the Dutch manager. He pointed to underperforming signings who have struggled to adapt, adding that Slot has had significant transfer funds but has not yet fully stamped his authority on the squad. Murphy highlighted the risk of missing European qualification entirely if Liverpool exit tonight, saying: “This is his team and this defence of the Premier League and potential loss of an opportunity in Europe... If that happens, then I wouldn’t be surprised in the current climate if they look at it and go, ‘what’s around is something better.’ Time for a change.” He dismissed immediate panic over Slot’s job security – “No. I don’t think that’s the way the hierarchy work”- but noted one major caveat: Xabi Alonso remains available. “If they’re going to do it in the summer, why not do it now? And let him see what he’s got,” Murphy said. “Alonso is the one the fans want... I think Liverpool will go for him.” Murphy stressed that while Alonso is not necessarily the only answer, his availability and popularity among supporters make him a logical target should Liverpool decide on a change of direction. The Reds face Galatasaray in the Round of 16 second leg tonight, with the Turkish side having a slim 1-0 lead, thanks to Mario Lemina’s 7th minute strike last week in Turkey.
