Beyond the decks: How Jemi Ytee is reshaping Nigeria’s festival culture

By Juliet Ebirim Nigerian DJ, producer and cultural curator, Oritsejemiyotan Misan is gradually carving out a space within the country’s evolving alternative music scene, blending sound, storytelling and outdoor experiences into a distinct creative identity. Born in Delta State and raised in Warri, Misan, professionally known as Jemi Ytee, studied International Studies and Diplomacy at the University of Benin, where she obtained both Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees. Central to her creative vision is the Axsend Africa Festival, an outdoor music and lifestyle event designed to explore Africa’s landscapes through sound and storytelling. Built on the philosophy “Where Adventure Meets Music,” the festival stands out for its unconventional staging, including large-scale outdoor gatherings set against natural terrains like hilltops. The festival aims to spotlight the continent’s natural and urban landscapes, positioning Nigeria as a destination for experiential music tourism. while promoting cultural identity and creative expression. Ytee’s long-standing interest in music began in childhood, when she learned to play instruments including the piano. In recent years, she has focused on developing a sound rooted in Afrofusion and Afrotech, combining electronic music structures with elements of Afrobeats and gospel-inspired themes. Her work spans DJ mixes and original recordings, including tracks such as “Your Love,” “Next Level,” and “Addicted,” as well as a multi-genre EP released in 2022. Her performance style incorporates visual elements, including face murals inspired by Nigerian music icon Fela Anikulapo Kuti, adding a layer of artistic expression to her sets. Ytee is also the founder of Ytee’s Yard, a community-driven homecoming platform in Delta State that brings together music, food and social connection during the festive season. She co-founded Axsend Africa Enterprise Limited, a company with interests spanning fashion, community initiatives and other services.
