By Adeola Badru Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Owoade, has charged the newly appointed acting Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Tunji Disu, to rebuild public trust in the Nigeria Police and champion the protection of human rights as he assumes leadership of the Nigeria Police Force. In a congratulatory message issued through his Director of Media and Publicity, Bode Durojaye, the monarch urged the new police chief to prioritise the protection of innocent citizens, uphold the rule of law and implement reforms that would foster a more professional, accountable and community-oriented police force. The monarch noted that as the new acting IGP assumes responsibility for both the goodwill and liabilities of the Nigeria Police Force, he could only wish him emphatic success in office, stressing that his performance would have a profound impact on ordinary citizens and the nation at large. According to him, “As you settle down, sir, I urge you to be professional and write your name in gold by giving us the new police Nigerians are craving for, in order for the police to gain the trust of society. “Your career has been a shining beacon of courage and resilience. It is a call to service that you are exceptionally prepared for. “It is expected that your leadership will bridge the gap between the Police and the community, fostering a safer, more secure and citizen-friendly environment. “You have consistently chosen service over self, setting a high standard for integrity and courage. Your dedication, discipline and hard work have paid off in this well-deserved appointment. “As you step into this commanding role, may your leadership continue to prioritise the protection of the innocent and the steadfast upholding of the rule of law. “The nation looks to you for a safer tomorrow. As you take the helm, I am confident that your strategic vision will steer the Nigeria Police Force towards a new era of proactive policing, enhanced security and public trust.” The monarch further observed that for the Nigeria Police to engender public trust and encourage the reporting of crimes, thereby contributing to more effective crime-fighting and the advancement of justice, it is essential to safeguard the fundamental rights of all citizens. He therefore urged the new acting police boss to establish effective human rights desks in all police stations, state commands and zonal commands nationwide, to be manned by qualified personnel with a clear mandate to address cases of human rights abuses. Oba Owoade also congratulated the former IGP, Kayode Egbetokun, on what he described as “his distinguished service,” referencing his “decades of dedication, professionalism, and commitment to strengthening internal security.”
