By Henry Umoru, Abuja The President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, on Friday inaugurated the All Progressives Congress (APC) Convention Subcommittee on Programs and Events, urging members to work diligently to ensure the success of the party’s upcoming convention. Speaking at the inaugural meeting in Abuja, Akpabio praised the APC leadership under Professor Yelwata Natawe for appointing experienced members to the subcommittee, noting that their expertise should guarantee smooth execution. He said, “It is a privilege to be recognised by the ruling APC. Therefore, we should not have any issues in this committee as far as performance is concerned.” In a statement by his Special Assistant, Jackson Udom, the Senate President emphasized the importance of organization and decorum, noting that speeches should not be repeated and that attention must be given to representation from the six geopolitical zones to allow governors and sub-national leaders to showcase their achievements. Akpabio used the occasion to reaffirm the National Assembly’s support for the Tinubu-led administration’s development agenda, citing key economic reforms such as exchange rate harmonization, removal of the fuel subsidy, and tax reforms under the National Revenue Service (NRS) that have increased non-oil revenue. He added that recent defections to the APC reflect gratitude for the government’s performance since 2023 and stressed that the committee’s task is to organize a convention that will facilitate the election of national officers capable of steering the party toward another APC government in 2027. In brief remarks, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, commended the committee members, supported Akpabio’s assessment of the economy, and urged them to work diligently to ensure the convention’s success.
