By Ayo Onikoyi Afrobeats artiste, Cross “Kwate” David, has recorded a new project titled From Me To You as he also moves to support charitable causes in Nigeria through collaboration with the Omooba Foundation. The singer has called on the foundation to donate the sum of N5 million to assist less privileged people across the country as part of his effort to give back to society. Speaking on the initiative, Kwate said his decision to support charitable causes was inspired by his personal journey in the music industry and the challenges he faced while building his career. “I have always been a fighter for success. The road to greatness in life is narrow. I started music during the era of CDs when we had to promote our songs from one radio station to another. It was not easy, but I kept pushing and today I give God the glory for the progress,” he said. According to him, the success of some of his recent songs has also motivated him to extend help to the less privileged. He noted that some of his releases have been gaining traction on digital platforms, including appearances on Apple Music playlists and trending charts on social media. Kwate explained that the charitable gesture formed part of his corporate social responsibility, adding that he felt the need to give back to the society that supported his growth. “The universe has favoured me and I believe it is important to support the community that helped shape my career. That is why I decided to work with the Omooba Foundation to assist the less privileged,” he added. Kwate, also known as Omini Kwate, hails from Edo State but currently resides in the United States. The versatile Afrobeats artiste blends elements of hip-hop, dancehall and Afro rhythms, a style that has earned him recognition across Africa, Europe and the United States. His musical journey began in Edo State before he relocated to Lagos in 1998 to further pursue his career. He gained wider recognition in 2010 with the release of his hit song Party Dey Here from his debut album Tami Lorobo, which enjoyed airplay across the country. In 2012, he collaborated with singer Jawo on the single Baby Give Me More, a track that brought him further attention and earned him nominations in several award categories. Kwate won the Best New Artist of the Year award at the 2013 Global Excellence Awards presented by entertainment personalities Kenny Ogungbe and Dayo Adeneye. His international profile continued to rise with nominations at the Mnet Asian Music Awards (MAMA) and the African Entertainment Awards Malaysia in 2014. In 2015, he was nominated for Best Male Performer in Diaspora and later served as a brand ambassador for a telecommunications company in Malaysia, where one of his songs was adopted as a caller tune. After taking a brief break from music, Kwate returned in 2024 with the single On Ground featuring Black IQ, which later had a remix featuring rapper Magnito, while singer Portable also contributed a verse.
