2027: Wike-backed PDP warns Senate against dragging Nigeria into flawed election

By Luminous Jannamike ABUJA — The Wike-backed faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has urged the Senate to expedite amendments to the Electoral Act, warning that further delays could push Nigeria into another flawed election cycle. Mohammed Haruna Jungudo, National Publicity Secretary of the PDP National Caretaker Committee, raised the concern in an interview with Vanguard on Wednesday, noting that the slow pace of action by the National Assembly sends the wrong signal at a time when public confidence in the electoral process remains fragile. “The Senate and the National Assembly should recognise the importance of this amendment to the Electoral Act and ensure its speedy passage to strengthen our electoral system and processes,” Jungudo said. He added that postponing the amendments risks deepening existing weaknesses and eroding voter trust ahead of future elections. “They must not allow the country to enter another election cycle without addressing the flaws exposed by the 2023 elections,” he stressed. The PDP’s warning comes amid mounting pressure from political actors and civil society groups, who insist that reforms to the Electoral Act are essential to prevent a repeat of the controversies that marred the last general elections.
