By Luminous Jannamike ABUJA — Presidential aspirant of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Dr Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim, has urged party members to urgently close ranks ahead of the 2027 elections, warning that disunity could weaken the party’s chances at the polls. The call came after a series of consultations, including a solidarity visit to Bauchi State Governor and Chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum, Bala Mohammed. Also present at the meeting was Senator Zainab Kure. The discussions focused on strengthening cooperation within the party at a time of internal political challenges. “Our unity is our strength. We must close ranks, rebuild trust, and present a cohesive front capable of delivering credible leadership to Nigerians,” Olawepo-Hashim said. The Bauchi meeting later expanded to include the PDP Deputy National Chairman, the Bauchi State PDP Chairman and aides of the governor, with participants emphasizing reconciliation, discipline and stronger coordination within party leadership. Olawepo-Hashim also commended Governor Mohammed for what he described as steadfast commitment to multiparty democracy and resilience in defending party principles despite political pressure. In a related development, the presidential hopeful met with PDP chairmanship candidates ahead of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Council elections scheduled for February 21. The meeting brought together the party’s FCT chairman, secretary, members of the Board of Trustees and incumbent Area Council chairmen to review preparations and strengthen grassroots mobilisation. “The upcoming FCT Area Council elections will test our organizational capacity and readiness. We must remain focused, disciplined, and united in our pursuit of service to the people,” he said. Discussions during the session focused on improving grassroots structures, encouraging transparency and ensuring discipline in party activities, as leaders work to strengthen the party’s readiness for upcoming local and national elections. Olawepo-Hashim also reaffirmed his commitment to reconciliation, mentorship and capacity building across party structures, saying the ongoing consultations are aimed at energising members, bridging internal divides and consolidating support ahead of future electoral contests.
