By Luminous Jannamike ABUJA — The Rescue Nigeria Alliance (RNA) has raised concerns that the inauguration of the ‘City Boys’ initiative by Seyi Tinubu could undermine democratic values as Nigeria moves toward the 2027 elections, warning that the development reflects a growing disconnect between political elites and ordinary citizens. The position was contained in a statement signed by the group’s National Chairman, Basil Chudi Nwolisa, who said the alliance spoke out because of the potential political and social implications of the initiative. “We are appalled, yet not surprised, by the inauguration of the ‘City Boys’ by Seyi Tinubu, son of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. This brazen display of arrogance and entitlement is a stark reminder of the disconnect between the ruling elite and the struggling masses,” the group said. RNA said the development raises broader concerns about the growing influence of wealth in political mobilization and the message it sends to citizens facing economic hardship. “The emergence of the City Boys group is a classic case of moneyed interests gone rogue, confusing patriotism with authoritarianism and indecent pursuit of wealth. It’s a slap in the face to the millions of Nigerians who toil daily to make ends meet, while a select few indulge in unbridled opulence,” the statement added. The alliance warned that visible displays of wealth and influence linked to political structures could worsen public frustration and deepen social divisions. “We condemn this affront to Nigerian values and decency. The City Boys’ ostentatious display of wealth and power is a recipe for disaster, a ticking time bomb that threatens the very fabric of our society,” it said. Addressing citizens, the group urged Nigerians to continue demanding accountability and transparency from those in authority while assuring marginalized communities of its support. “To the poor and marginalized, we say: your cries have not fallen on deaf ears. We hear you, we see you, and we stand with you. The Rescue Nigeria Alliance will continue to champion your cause, demanding accountability and transparency from those in power,” the statement read. The organization also cautioned that political legitimacy cannot be secured through wealth or influence alone, stressing that public trust must be earned. “To Seyi Tinubu and the City Boys, we say: your actions are a book-a-cool-corridor-in-hell approach to leadership. You may have the money, but you will not buy your way into the hearts of Nigerians. Your arrogance will be met with resistance, and your impunity will be challenged,” Nwolisa added.
