12 Control Tower personnel rescued as fire guts MMIA Terminal 1 in Lagos

By Olasunkanmi Akoni All 12 personnel trapped in the control tower of Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos, were rescued alive without injuries after a fire gutted part of Terminal 1, destroying some items in the process. The fire, which originated from the IT server room on the third floor of the five-storey building near the E-wing of the departure lounge, was contained thanks to the coordinated efforts of multiple agencies. The immediate and remote causes of the incident, which occurred on Sunday afternoon, are still under investigation. The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service and the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) Fire Service continue to battle the blaze. Controller-General of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Margaret Adeseye, confirmed that no lives were lost. She said, “The fire outbreak at Terminal 1 of MMIA is under control. All 12 personnel of the control tower have been successfully rescued alive without any injuries, and no one remains trapped.”
