By Chioma Obinna With the growing burden of lifestyle-related diseases in Nigeria WELFAS, a pioneering digital health platform, has officially launched its AI-powered wellness and fitness app, aimed at helping Nigerians take control of their health and prevent chronic illnesses. Speaking at the launch, Brigadier General Innocent Enwuchola, Commander-in-Chief of Medical, represented by Colonel Ernest Onuchukwu, hailed the initiative as a bold step toward modernizing health in Nigeria. “Innovation is no longer optional in healthcare. WELFAS is not just launching an app; it is introducing a culture of wellness that mirrors the discipline and preventive mindset long embedded in military medicine. Healthy citizens make stronger families, stronger communities, and ultimately, a stronger nation.” The launch comes against a backdrop of concerning statistics. According to WELFAS founders, one in five Nigerians is overweight, a trend that contributes to rising rates of hypertension, diabetes, and other lifestyle diseases. The experts warned that without preventive measures, the human and economic toll will continue to escalate. The Keynote speaker Foluso Ogunwale, founder and CEO of i-Fitness, emphasised the importance of digital solutions in bridging gaps in Nigeria’s healthcare ecosystem. “Nigeria stands at a defining moment. With a population exceeding 227 million and a median age of 18, our strength can quickly become a liability if we do not embrace innovation, accessibility, and sustainability in health,” Ogunwale said. The WELFAS app offers users personalised meal plans, calorie tracking, fitness routines, AI-driven health insights, and access to certified doctors and nutritionists, making preventive healthcare both affordable and practical. Users can even scan local Nigerian foods to track calorie intake, ensuring wellness advice is tailored to local diets. Speaking, the Medical Director at Cynosure Aesthetic Plastic Surgery and founder of WELFAS, Dr. Ogbe Omoruyi, highlighted the app’s long-term goal. “Our mission is to empower Nigerians to take control of their health every day, rather than waiting for illness to strike. Lifestyle changes can reverse many common health issues and reduce dependence on medical interventions.” With the WELFAS app now available on Apple and Google Play stores, the founders said it will drive a cultural shift in health management across Nigeria. “This is more than a product launch. It is a public health intervention that can save lives, reduce healthcare costs, and foster a healthier, more resilient nation.” Artificial Intelligence Project Advisor, Dr. Obumneme John-Kennedy Ortuanya, stated, “It helps users track their progress, adjust meal plans, and even consult with medical professionals from the comfort of their homes. We are democratizing access to wellness in Nigeria.” The Medical consultant Dr. Victoria Bakare further emphasised the holistic nature of the platform: “Wellness isn’t just about weight loss. It’s about being mentally, physically, and medically fit. WELFAS brings all these aspects together, helping Nigerians achieve a healthier, longer, and more productive life.” High-point of the launch was the unveiling of actress Kate Henshaw as WELFAS brand ambassador
